Atelier Touareg
Make your own silver jewerly with the Touareg in Senegal
From Monday to Saturday
Location: Somone,
Senegal.
Welcome to Atelier Touareg
In Atelier Touareg you step into the world of Touareg silverwork. During our workshops, artisans guide you step by step to create your own piece of jewelry (a ring, bracelet, necklace, or earrings) shaped in silver and inspired by tradition.
The atelier is established by Suzy and Abdoulaye, who are also the founders of the jewelry brand Aza Laye.
Together, they bring this heritage to a wider public, giving visibility and value to a craft that is rich in story but too often unseen.
The Workshop
An encounter with silver and heritage
Welcome
Every session starts with Touareg tea, an important part of desert life. As you enjoy the tea, we give a short introduction about the Touareg people; desert nomads, traders, and skilled silversmiths. Their traditions, symbols, and relationship with silver.
Choice & Design
Participants can choose to make a ring, bracelet, necklace, or earrings. To inspire their design, we share examples of traditional Touareg jewelry, modern pieces, images, and stories.
Creation
With the artisan’s help, the silver is melted, shaped, and engraved. Using traditional tools and techniques, guests bring their own design to life.
Completion
Each jewel is carefully filed, polished, and refined until complete. Guests leave with their handmade and unique silver piece; carrying both a special memory and Touareg heritage.
Choose your moment:
Morning Session — 09:30 to 12:30
Afternoon Session — 14:00 to 17:00
Both sessions follow the same program, in a calm and shaded setting.

ABOUT THE TOUAREG
Silver from the Desert
The Touareg are a nomadic people of the Sahara, known as the ‘blue men of the desert’ for their indigo robes. For centuries, they crossed the desert with their caravans, guiding salt, dates, and gold across vast distances. Silver became their chosen metal: unlike gold, which they considered impure, silver was seen as noble, pure, and tied to the moon and the desert night.
For the Touareg, jewelry is never just decoration. It is protection on long desert journeys, a symbol of identity, and a mark of family and belonging. Touareg silverwork remains both art and memory: a living heritage passed from generation to generation.
The desert is our home, even when the camp moves, the desert stays within us.
